The Dawgs played host this past weekend to 6 different teams from around Western Canada in their 5th Annual New Era Mother’s Day Classic.
The tournament featured 9 teams in total – Team Saskatchewan, North Delta Blue Jays, St. Albert Cardinals, Calgary Dinos, Edmonton Cardinals and Fort McMurray Oil Giants; along with the Dawgs 18U Black, 18U Red and 16U teams.
After some rain on Wednesday evening, the stage was set for another great weekend of baseball underneath a big Alberta Blue Sky and mid-20s temperatures; perfect baseball weather!
For the first time in tournament history, the Championship Game would be an ALL-DAWGS affair with the Dawgs 18U Black and Dawgs 18U Red scrapping it out for bragging rights and the Championship trophy.
Dawgs Senior, Brendan Logan, got the start for the Dawgs 18U Black and Blake Davidson, Sophomore, got the start for 18U Red. It did not take long for the 18U Black squad to get the bats going against Davidson, as they would jump out to front with a 4 run third inning and they never looked back. The Dawgs 18U Black would cruise to a lop sided 14-3 victory.
Brendan Logan went on to throw four shutout innings surrendering only one hit while striking out seven. Matt Wilkinson and Jackson Fraser would come in relief out of the bullpen, throwing 2 innings and 1 inning, respectively.
Blake Davidson took the loss. In 3+ innings pitched, he surrendered 7 runs on 5 hits while striking out 2 and walking none. Fernando Fuentes, Jack Howard and Mitch Dennis all pitched in relief.
Dawgs 18U Black offense was a group effort and managed to collect 10 hits in the game. Jordan Lussier, Tyler McWillie, Micah McDowell, Ricardo Sanchez, Kye Seitz, Ayden Makarus (2) and Tristan Peters (3) all contributed RBI’s in the offensive onslaught.
Dawgs 18U Red offense struggled at the plate, managing to tally only 5 hits in the game. Jack Howard and Dryden Howse each had a double while Kirklon White had an RBI triple.
The Dawgs Staff would like to thank all the players and volunteers that helped the tournament run smoothly. Thank you to all the teams that participated.
CONGRATULATIONS DAWGS 18U BLACK ON THE 4-PEAT! GO DAWGS!
